Dr. Mark Hnatiuk

 

Dr. Mark Hnatiuk is a hematologist from Edmonton, Alberta. He completed medical school at the University of Calgary and this internal medicine plus hematology residency training at the University of Alberta. He is currently appointed Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Alberta and he has been practising as a staff hematologist at the U of A hospital/ Kaye Edmonton Clinic since 2016. His clinical interests include myeloproliferative neoplasms, thrombosis, and parenteral iron supplementation. He is also the bone marrow procurement lead for the division of hematology.

Dr. Irwin Sandhu

After graduating from the University of Alberta’s medical school, Dr. Irwindeep Sandhu completed an internal medicine residency at the University of British Columbia and a hematology residency at McMaster University. He was recruited to the University of Alberta in 2009, where in addition to his position in the Division of Hematology, he has an adjunct appointment in the Department of Oncology.  Leadership and Collaborations: Dr. Sandhu is acting lead for the Northern Alberta Blood and Marrow Program and the medical director for the cellular apheresis program. He is a fellow in the Alberta Chapter of the American College of Physicians. He coordinates Hematologic care services for the Northwest Territories, and serves as inpatient teaching attending for the malignant hematology service at the Cross Cancer Institute.

Dr. Cynthia Wu

Dr Cynthia Wu is an Associated Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology at the University of Alberta Hospital. She completed her Medical School and Internal Medicine residency training at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton. She then completed a Hematology fellowship followed by a 2 year Thrombosis fellowship at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.  Her research focus is venous thromboembolism with a special interest in cancer associated thrombosis.  Dr Wu is the director of the Cancer Associated Thrombosis Clinic run out of the Kaye Edmonton Clinic which she created in 2014.  She is also the director of the Thrombosis Elective Rotation for trainees.

Dr. Marina Ebied

Marina is a practicing clinical pharmacist at the Cross Cancer Institute. She holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Alberta and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Waterloo. Her clinical practice focuses on ambulatory hematology, where she works collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team and has led the development of several pharmacy-led clinics in multiple myeloma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia. In addition, Marina practices on the inpatient hematology and cellular therapy services, providing care to patients undergoing autologous stem cell transplantation and CAR T-cell therapy.

Dr. Alicia Long

Dr. Alicia Long is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Alberta, and works as an obstetrician/gynecologist and minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. She completed medical school and residency at the University of Alberta, as then went on to complete a two-year fellowship in Vancouver, British Columbia in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery, Endometriosis, and Chronic Pelvic Pain. During this time she concurrently completed a Master of Science degree in Reproductive and Developmental Sciences (RDS).
Special interests include the advancement of endometriosis care, encompassing screening, diagnosis, and treatment of all stages of endometriosis and associated pelvic pain, from both a medical and surgical perspective. She is currently running the lead resident gynecology teaching clinic and is involved in clinical research and teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. 

Dr. Monika Oliver

Dr. Oliver completed both her internal medicine residency and hematology subspeciality training at the University of Alberta. Her clinical interests include thrombotic microangiopathies and complement mediated disorders, with a particular emphasis on paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). She is an active member of the Canadian PNH Network and managing all PNH patients in Northern Alberta. She also has a keen interest apheresis medicine with a focus on quality improvement. She was the 2021 recipient of the Marshall Eliuk Fellowship Award in hematology which she utilized to complete a clinical fellowship in complement disorders and apheresis at the University Health Network in Toronto. She is currently a staff hematologist and Assistant Professor with a cross appointment as apheresis co-lead in the division of Hematology at the University of Alberta Hospital

Dr. Susan Nahirniak

Dr. Susan Nahirniak is the Medical Director of the provincial Transfusion & Transplantation Medicine Program for Alberta Precision Laboratories as well as a professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Alberta.

As part of her academic focus, Dr. Nahirniak has been interested in improving appropriateness of blood utilization and clinical guideline generation. She has been a member of the National Advisory Committee on Blood and Blood Products and the International Collaboration on Transfusion Medicine since their inceptions, and is currently the vice chair of the CSA Technical Committee for Z902 standard dealing with Blood and Blood Products.

Dr. Charles Yin

Dr. Charles Yin is a resident physician in the Division of Hematological Pathology at the University of Alberta. He completed an MD/PhD at Western University where his doctorate was obtained in immunology and microbiology. His primary clinical and research interests are in the areas of lymphoma/myeloma, cellular therapy and molecular hematopathology.
